  • Veteran info regarding DD Form 214
Please pass on to other vets. It's official: DD-214 discharge papers are NOW ONLINE.

The National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) has provided the following website for veterans to gain access to their DD-214s online:

    http://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/

This may be particularly helpful when a veteran needs a copy of his/her DD-214 for employment purposes. NPRC is working to make it easier for veterans with computers and Internet access to obtain copies of documents from their military files.

Military veterans and the next of kin of deceased former military members may now use a new online military personnel records system to request documents.

Other individuals with a need for documents must still complete the Standard Form 180, which can be downloaded from the online web site. Because the requester will be asked to supply all information essential for NPRC to process the request, delays that normally occur when NPRC has to ask veterans for additional information will be minimized. The new web-based application was designed to provide better service on these requests by eliminating the records centers mailroom and processing time.

Please pass this information on to former military personnel you may know and their dependents.

FLAG AMENDMENT

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that flag desecration is "protected speech," after a self-proclaimed communist was charge with desecrating the U.S. Flag. The 1989 Texas v. Johnson case invalidated laws against flag desecration in 48 states and the District of Columbia. The American Legion and veterans everywhere were outraged that eh Court, in a 5-4 ruling, took away a fundamental right of the people to protect their flag – a right possessed since the birth of this nation.

For 17 years the American Legion and the Citizens Flag Alliance, a coalition of more than 140 organizations, have championed the passage of a narrowly drawn constitutional amendment that would return to the people the right to protect Old Glory. Such an amendment has passed the House of Representatives six times but has fallen short of the necessary two-thirds supermajority required to pass in the Senate. In 2006, the amendment fell only one vote short in the Senate.

Polls have shown that most of the American people support a flag protection amendment. Moreover, all 50 states, by action of their state legislatures, have, in writing, appealed to the U.S. Congress to pass the proposed flag amendment and send it to the states to be ratified.

Rep. Jo Ann Emerson, R-MO., introduced H.J. Res. 13 in the 112th Congress. It says, "The Congress shall have power to prohibit the physical desecration of the flag of the United States." The American Legion supports H.J. Res. 13. Its companion measure is S.J. Res. 19, introduced by Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah and Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont. By contacting members of Congress, The American Legion family can force a vote on this important issue. It's also important to get congressional candidates on record about where they stand on the flag amendment. It is up to our members to make it happen.

The greatest tragedy in flag mutilation is the disrespect it teaches children, disrespect for the values it embodies, and disrespect for those who have sacrificed for those values. Disrespect is the genesis of hate. It provokes the dissolution of our unity, a unity which has only one symbol – the flag.

If the flag is good enough to cover the coffins of our heroes, it is good enough to protect.

THE AMERICAN LEGION SUPPORTS A FLAG AMENDMENT TO THE U.S. CONSTITUTION

Post & Member Warning

The Department has been informed by our local Post that a Legion member from Post 31 in Rutland, VT, by the name of Mark Chandler, may be attempting to get other Legion Posts to loan him money.  Post 31 in Rutland, VT was called and the Post adjutant explained that while Mr. Chandler is a valid Legion member and has a DD214, he has been traveling around the US for years, trying to con posts into giving him money.  They are revoking his membership and will not renew him in 2012.

Sons of American Legion Squadron 115 invite you to participate in their upcoming Golf Tournament

Legion PSAs Available

As an offshoot to last year's "A Powerful Force for Our Nation" campaign, the Legion's Public Relations Division has created a CD featuring radio-ready public service ads on the Four Pillars of Service, as well as the Legion's service to veterans and the Legion family.

The 30- to 60-second ads can be delivered to any local radio station willing to play them on air. And while CDs have already been sent to several talk-radio stations across the country, they are equally well-suited for local FM stations and can be used as a launching point for Legionnaires to personally record a Legion PSA.

The PSA campaigns have been designed to broaden the Legion's reach nationwide by using grassroots efforts of Legionnaires at their local posts. The PSAs allow Legionnaires to use local media to showcase all that the Legion does every day in our communities.

To obtain one or more copies of the CD free of charge, contact the PR division at (317) 630-1253 or e-mail This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Message sent from The Pantry of Broward

To All This e-mail is coming to you as a plea for food. If you are at all able to run a food drive in your neighborhood, a club you belong to, at your church or place of business, we are in desperate need of food. Our shelves are almost completely bare. If you need any sort of help running a food drive, we can help. We can produce flyers for you, supply boxes, we have door hangers you can use for a neighborhood drive. This is the time of year after the holidays that food for our seniors and grandparents raising grandchildren is not always on people's minds, but as you know we are an organization that needs food all year long, not just during the holidays.

A food drive would be a big help, if we brought in 10-15 small, medium, or large food drives, it would make a great difference. Every can of food helps those that need. If someone would rather donate say $5.00 we will take money donations also, just please get their name and address so we can send them thank you letters for their kind contribution. As always we appreciate you, for all that you do, large or small. Your time, treasures and talents are what keep us going. You are all an integral part of what we do for our community. Please contact us when you start a food drive so we can plan and arrange for pickup of the collection. If you have any questions or need help please call me directly. Thank you for taking the time to care.

Bricks for Beaches Veterans Park

Stewards of the Beaches Veterans Memorial Park are selling bricks to help fund the remaining phases of the park at Mayport Road and Atlantic Boulevard in Atlantic Beach.

The park opened last year, but organizers want to build a great lawn and memorial to honor fallen chaplains during U.S. military campaigns. The brick sales will help fund some of these projects.

Bricks are $75 and can be engraved, with three lines' of 15 letters each, memorializing those supporters want to be remembered. Send tax-deductible contributions to VFW 3270, 915 S. Eighth St., Jacksonville Beach, FL 32250, marked BVMP, or call Liz Hill at 904-234-2692
