General Scholarship The American Legion Department of Florida now offers a general scholarship for high school seniors. Chicago publisher William Boyce founded the Boy Scouts of America on February 8, 1910. The new BSA quickly established a national office, developed a temporary handbook, sought out Baden-Powell's endorsement and soon thereafter obtained a Congressional Charter from the US Congress in 1916. To qualify a post, unit, squadron or salon must donate one dollar per member based upon its official membership total as of June 1, 2010. Employer Awards Program The first American Legion employer award was established in 1947, and recognized employers across the country who had established outstanding records in the employment and retention of workers with disabilities. Later, other award categories were added to recognize outstanding employers of older workers and of veterans in general, and in 1992, the Employment Service awards were established to recognize outstanding individuals and local offices within the state employment service agencies. The American Legion's Junior Shooting Sports Program is a national activity administered through Post sponsored Junior Shooting Clubs. The program exists to provide gun safety and marksmanship training for young people, ages 14 through 18, as well as offering opportunities for competitive shooting which includes an annual national tournament. History of Legion College The American Legion College began at the 1944 National Convention with Resolution No. 138 and was created to help educate and integrate veterans joining the Legion after World War II. The first two Legion College sessions convened at National Headquarters in Indianapolis in July and December 1946, and covered a variety of topics, including Legion Service Work, Youth Programs, Child Welfare, Legion Legislation, Veterans Preference, Community Service Programs, and Legion Public Relations and Speeches. “A constitutional speech contest” The American Legion Oratorical Contest exists to develop deeper knowledge and appreciation for the U.S. Constitution among high school students. The Temporary Financial Assistance (TFA) Program serves veterans and active service members who have minor children at home and in their care.  This program was established in 1926 as one of The Legion’s first Children and Youth Programs.  Grants, funded by the National Headquarters in Indianapolis, IN are provided to qualified families in need, and  offset necessities such as rent, utilities and food.  For the children of our service members and veterans,  the possibility of homelessness,  loss of basic utilities (i.e. electric and water) and malnutrition is prevented via the TFA Program. In the fall of 1993 Chuck (Tramp) Dare shared a dream with then Post Commander (Polka) Bill Kaledas at the American Legion Post 396 in Garden City, Michigan. The idea came about to start a motorcycle association that would operate within the American Legion. The idea was to provide an atmosphere whereas Post, Auxiliary and S.A.L. members, who shared an enthusiasm for motorcycles, could come together.
